(Burlington, Vt.) A senior patent litigator and a recent law school graduate with experience as a professional engineer have joined the Intellectual Property Law Practice Group at Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, bringing the group’s census to 14 lawyers. Hiring of the two new attorneys was announced recently by Larry Meier, chair of the IP Practice Group at DRM.

Attorney Thomas D. Kohler joins DRM after practicing patent and trademark law for more than 20 years in New York and California. He began his legal career as a clerk in the firm of Pennie & Edmonds LLP in New York., rising to become a partner in the firm in Palo Alto, Cal. in 1998. When Pennie & Edmonds closed its doors at the end of 2003, Kohler became a partner at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP in San Francisco, where he has worked since January, 2004. His practice encompasses patent prosecution and litigation as well as managing intellectual property portfolios worldwide for a number of international manufacturing firms. He has supervised teams of attorneys working in such technology areas as medical devices, consumer products, internet and computer products, semiconductor fabrication and telecommunications.

Kohler graduated from Clarkson University with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked at both the General Electric Company and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as an engineer before studying law at the University of Exeter in England and the College of William and Mary, where he received the juris doctor degree in 1988 from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law. He later earned a masters degree in European Intellectual Property and Comparative Antitrust Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Kohler is a registered patent attorney.

Attorney Justin McCabe graduated near the top of his class at Vermont Law School this spring. He holds engineering degrees from the University of Michigan and Case Western Reserve University, and worked as a chemical engineering consultant in Virginia and in business operations and management in Ohio before studying law at the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in Washington, and subsequently at VLS. McCabe is also a registered patent agent.

McCabe was an environmental technician with the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services in Concord and helped to develop administrative rules for removal of native and invasive aquatic species, protection of endangered species habitat and dredging. While in law school he worked with attorneys at Martin & Associates in Barre, Schuster, Buttrey & Wing, P.A., in Lebanon, N.H. and with the Office of the Federal Public Defender in Burlington.
